22 Design Studio – 4th Dimension Watches
22 Design Studio is a Taiwanese design disciplinary founded by Sean Yu and Yi-Ting Cheng. The designers experienced the classic contemporary buildings during a trip to Japan and they found inspiration in the architectural element, concrete. The material became the medium of choice for their creativity, with products ranging from jewellery to writing tools to time pieces.
Following the success of the the 4th Dimension Clocks, the pair recently launched the 4th Dimension Wristwatch – a timepiece that mimics a spiral staircase and quietly engages the viewer in the idea of a 4th dimension.
The wristwatch is finished with brass crown and a leather strap that become richer and darker over time, further personalizing it and making it more comfortable. Every detail has been designed to show the beauty of the raw material from the delicate sculpting of the dial to the natural tanned leather strap.
As watches become popular accessories, many timepiece brands have entered the market. Few have succeeded in crafting a watch that is bold yet minimal in aesthetic, functional and affordable for something that is well crafted.
Upon graduating from college, Yu and Cheng decided to merge their creative talents to form 22 Design Studio. They were 22. To remember the motivation that led to the creation of their brand, and the hope of never forgetting their original aspirations, they named their brand, 22™ – a tribute to their age.
Good design and quality materials are elevated when combined with thoughtful concept and vision. The pair’s fascination with contemporary architecture and design, as well as the progression of product development, lead towards crafting the perfect timepiece.
The spiral staircase inspiration serves as a connection between two spaces of different heights and engages users in the concept of a fourth dimension. Each stair turn at a 30° angle, representing one hour so the 12 steps allow users to tell time.
Yu and Cheng took four years to develop the 4th Dimension Wristwatch and has partnered with design and lifestyle brand MollaSpace to launch the timepiece, now available on Kickstarter.
