The Roger Hotel New York

“I’m King of the World!” I yell fervently at the top of my lungs, hands up and air-embracing what was once the tallest skycraper in the world, the Empire State Building. I’m doing all this from our very own terrace at The Roger New York – a stylish hotel on the corner of Madison Ave and 31st St – which we’re calling home for a few nights in the city that never sleeps.

When you think of NYC, you could easily name a plethora of distinctive features. Yellow cabs, endless skyscrapers, fire-escapes, steam rising from under, cronuts, you get the gist. At the top of my list, though not necessarily the most immediate choice but still an important one, a rooftop that showcases the iconic Manhattan views. So naturally, when I discovered that The Roger has suites that come with private outdoor space, I frothed and repeated to Glenn to “put me on a plane and fly me there toute de suite.”

This charming 15-storey boutique hotel is just a stone’s throw away from several subway lines, including the 6 which runs along the east side of Manhattan, and an easy walk to the famous Flatiron Building and Grand Central Terminal. Nestled in Murray Hill, The Roger is surrounded by corporate offices and residential buildings and while the neighbourhood can get quiet at night, unlike the crazy hustle and bustle of Times Square, the hotel is definitely a nice retreat for a chance to recover after a long day of back-to-back activities.

In typical NYC-fashion, our room is a cosy size space that’s been furnished to ooze sophisticated chic and luxurious comfort. There isn’t a pool – the first few amenities I look for when picking a hotel since fat genes don’t stop working just because you’re on holidays – but all the exploring and walking are enough to keep my beanpole figure intact.

Mornings begin with our usual ritual – stretch exercises, except we get to do these on our oversized rooftop terrace, surrounded by grandeur gothic architecture. And to the corporate worker in the other building who sees us in our underwear, strenuously extending our glutes, seeing him drinking his morning coffee, props to you mama!

Is the terrace excessive, you ask? Probably. Is it necessary? Absolutely. I mean, sure, our credit card didn’t quite agree when we booked this accommodation but when you see our Instagram – pretty much the only reason why anyone travels these days – where we use every inch of the panoramic Manhattan skyline to pose the house down, you have to wonder what you wouldn’t do to collect this priceless immersive experience.

There’s an intimate and elegant bistro and lounge, The Parlour, within the hotel that serves up a classic New York City breakfast (think H&H Bagels and Petrossian caviar) or a late afternoon cocktail. One of the other features that sold The Roger to us was the lobby. With its contemporary and funky Anna Busta interiors, furniture and styling, it’s in every way one of those modern boutique hotels for the savvy travellers, something which I self-proclaim to be.

Hands down, one of my favourite hotel experiences in terms of location, design and level of service, especially from a retreat that comes of a certain age and ancestry. For all you dear readers who are craving for some “concrete jungles where dreams are made of”, I’ve partnered with The Roger to offer a 15% off their best available rates when you use the code BUZZ. Enjoy!
