Marina Bay Sands – An opulent affair

When it comes to hotels and resorts in Singapore, Marina Bay Sands without a doubt is the first few that springs to mind. Known for its iconic landscape and architecture, this resort opened in 2010 in Marina Bay and has created expansive views of the city and brought pedestrian circulation to the southern tip of the island.

Developed by Las Vegas Sands, the hotel offers 2,561 luxury rooms and suites and is finished with the Sands SkyPark sitting atop its three towers. The SkyPark provides guests with a 360-degree view of Singapore’s skyline and this is where you will find the famous 150-metre infinity pool as well as restaurants, gardens and an observation deck. The interior of this resort is as much thought out as the grandeur of its exterior – installations from commissioned artists tie in seamlessly with the resort.

Situated in Marina Bay and built entirely on reclaimed land, Marina Bay Sands is an integrated resort that houses a hotel, convention and exhibition facilities, theatres, entertainment venues, retailers and restaurants. It is a five-minute train ride into the city centre but there really was no reason for us to go into town when everything we possibly wanted to do was easily available within the resort. If fashion and luxury are what you live for (or die for if you speak the Rachel Zoe lingo), your credit card will get a healthy workout with brands like Kenzo, Dior Homme, Prada, 3.1 Phillip Lim. If food is the thing that puts a smile on your face, there are restaurants that serve cuisine of every kind as well as a food court that offer an extensive range of local favourites.

Glenn and I stayed in the Sands Suite when we stopped over in Singapore via Tokyo in October. The suite was both luxurious and sexy – the kind where you had to channel Hugh Hefner to truly appreciate it. At 150-square metre, it featured a king bedroom and living room, six-person dining table, a billiard table, bathtub and walk-in shower and a balcony that overlooked the city. We had been tossing between a few options but Marina Bay Sands was an easy choice. Our love for architecture has left us flabbergasted at this edifice and the idea of an infinity pool that nestles 57 storeys above with an incredible cityscape view is too hard to pass up. What was once a mundane Marina Bay skyline has now transformed been into a distinctive and attractive destination.

The resort has attracted many tourists as well as staycationers looking for a respite. There was a constant buzz the entire time we were there, from swimmers (ok, no one was really swimming) with selfie sticks eager to boast the city view on social media to young families ready to savour every possible dish at the breakfast buffet. It was opulence overflow and at times surreal but it was an experience that I concur you need to go through at least once in this lifetime.
