Munsoo Kwon Autumn Winter 2017

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at Munsoo Kwon’s AW17 collection is Amish and rightly so. Models came down the runway in wide-brim hats – a distinct feature of men in the community – and scarves that highlighted the iconic beard.
To contrast the sombre Amish theme of black, dull brown, navy and tradition check patterns, the Korean designer threw in vibrants colours like red, green, yellow and purple. Kwon used luxurious materials like alpaca and velvet to create relevance and to symbolise the world outside of the Amish community.
Other Amish elements included capes, broadfall pants and suspenders worn with turtleneck and formal pants. Pushing the innovative component, sweatshirts had exaggerated sleeve and trousers came with an inner velvet layer around the waist revealed through unbuttoned panels.
Taking the idea of Rumspringa, the rite of passage that permits Amish youth to remain in the church or leave the community – Kwon has crafted wit into a cultural theme and continues to stay relevant by injecting inspired streetwear trend.
